Oleksandr Murashko was a Ukrainian artist, a representative of Art Nouveau and Impressionism, and a co-founder of the Ukrainian Academy of Arts.

He was an artist who elevated Ukrainian art to the Western European level and adapted it to the context of his time. He was a talented portraitist, yet instead of interiors, he used nature as an organic environment, emotionally and spiritually connected to the subject of the painting. His works are characterized by deep psychological insight.

Despite belonging to the Modernist movement, he rejected mythological-symbolic allegories and favored realistic subjects. The influence of Paris and Munich of that era can be traced in his works.

Murashko was killed on a street in Kyiv by a shot to the back of the head, most likely by Chekists. It was probably a political purge of the Ukrainian intelligentsia of that time.
