Mykhailo Zhuk

1883 – 1964

Mykhailo Zhuk is a Ukrainian artist, graphic designer, painter, poet, ceramist, translator, and educator. He was a member of the Association of Revolutionary Art of Ukraine and other unions.

This artist is another founder of the Ukrainian Academy of Arts. He spent most of his life teaching, working on the principles of Art Nouveau and Secession. However, during the repressions against the Ukrainian creative intelligentsia in the 1930s, he shifted the focus of his work toward decorative and applied arts.

His canvases were created in the genres of easel painting, as well as book and easel graphics. The artist's portraits are characterized by deep psychologism. Mykhailo Zhuk preferred working in techniques such as woodcut, etching, and xylography.

Most famous artworks: "White and Black" (1912–1914), Portrait of Mykhailo Kotsiubynsky (1907), "Fairy Tale" (1914).
