Ivan Trush

1869 – 1941

Ivan Trush is a Ukrainian artist, portraitist, art critic, and master of landscape painting. He was the organizer of the first professional art societies in Galicia and published the first Ukrainian art magazine, "Artystychnyi Visnyk."

He was called the poet of color and sun because he was a prominent representative of Impressionism, masterfully working with color. He can also be described as an intimate lyric painter with whom the revival of Galician painting began. In his genre scenes, he did not focus on details but reduced the narrative essence to a minimum.

The artist was characterized by a subtle psychologism, which is best seen in his portraits. He managed to paint Ivan Franko, Lesya Ukrainka, his father-in-law Mykhailo Drahomanov, and others. Instead, he hid his own image in the depiction of a lonely and free pine tree in the middle of a steppe, which can be found in several of his landscapes.

Most famous paintings: "Sunset in the Forest" (1904), "Pine. Triptych" (1925–1941), "Stooks near the Forest" (1919).
