Oleksandr Bohomazov

1880 – 1930

Oleksandr Bohomazov was one of the most innovative artists of the Ukrainian and global avant-garde, as well as a graphic artist and educator.

He was not only an outstanding painter but also a profound art theorist whose ideas were years ahead of their time. In 1914, he wrote his fundamental theoretical treatise "Painting and Elements," in which he outlined his own revolutionary concept: art must reflect the dynamics of modern life — movement, speed, and the energy of both machines and people. He spent his life in constant creative pursuit and became one of the founders of Cubo-Futurism in Ukraine.

Bohomazov also took part in designing sketches for Ukrainian currency. Unfortunately, during the Soviet era, his name was forgotten and his work banned, leaving his legacy hidden away for a long time. It was only at the end of the 20th century that his masterworks were rediscovered.

Most famous works: "Market" (1914), "Tramway" (1914), and "Lvivska Street in Kyiv" (1914).
